As an Authorised Seller we are able to centrally register Macs and iPads with Apple, which assists with asset management. Apple’s Device Enrolment Programme is a fast and efficient way to deploy Macs and iPads and other iOS devices which your business or school has leased.
Using DEP means that you can choose to supervise any iOS devices owned by your business but used by your staff, whether they’re office based or work remotely. This offers you a higher level of management and allows you to add restrictions, such as turning off Game Center and iMessage.
In addition to this, you can add a Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile for each device, which allows centralised control and deployment of software. This means that the deployment of your devices is no longer done manually and your staff can get working as soon as the device is turned on. Using an MDM gives you the ability to configure access to corporate services, account setting, and even which apps can be used. What is the cost?
To setup the initial DEP with Apple is free to all customers. To roll out an MDM solution of which or favoured choice of software is VMWare Airwatch is £5-£6 per user per month depending on volumes.
How are the costs of the Airwatch billed to my company?
This will be need to be paid by direct debit and will be a separate payment to any lease/rental contracts.
There are many buzzwords like DEP, MDM, and ADP. Can you explain the terminology?
The Device Enrolment Program (DEP) is part of the Apple Deployment Programs (ADP), which help businesses and schools easily deploy and configure iOS and OS X devices. DEP simplifies initial setup by automating mobile device management (MDM) enrolment and supervision of devices during setup
To simplify the process, you can skip certain Setup Assistant screens so your users can start using their devices right out of the box. Just ship an iPad to your user in its untouched state and they will just set it up and unbox in the normal way but you will have preconfigured the iPad remotely.
Can I add Mac computers into the MDM?
Yes, certainly any Apple iPad, iPhone, MacBook, or iMac can be registered.
If HardSoft help configure an Apple DEP solution, can you add onto the scheme existing devices?
We can BUT all must have been purchased via the Apple Store or an Apple Approved Reseller- such as HardSoft. There are fifty UK Apple Approved Resellers. Purchases from Amazon, Curry’s, and John Lewis can be added into the MDM but not with over-air updates and some functionality is lost in respect of remote wipe, bricking etc.
Is Apple Configurator the same as Apple Deployment Program?
The Apple Configurator scheme is an App on a Mac that once a Device was connected to the Mac it could be configured then removed and deployed. It was useful but slow and painful. DEP is a WEB app that configures device over the internet often called over-air. Therefore, it is easier, quicker and you do not even have to unbox an iPad to get it configured to deploy.
AirWatch, which is an MDM solution, and Apple Configurator offer similar restriction and security profiles. However, AirWatch MDM enables remote management and Over The Air functionality. A device that is managed solely by Apple Configurator must be plugged into a central Mac computer to amend profiles and settings or view device settings.
Does HardSoft manage the whole DEP process?
Not entirely. HardSoft’s role in the device enrolment process consists of order management functions, such as providing device serial numbers or IMEI numbers, creating a customer’s DEP Customer ID, providing our DEP Reseller ID, and a few other order details. Further actions in the programme — such as claiming and assigning devices in the DEP website and or to MDM servers — are the responsibility of the customer.
What resellers, distributors or carriers are eligible to support Device enrolment for their customers?

Does HardSoft specify in the terms of sale that the device must be removed from device enrolment when the customer no longer owns it?
No, but the Apple device enrolment terms agreed to by the customer at sign up require a customer to remove devices that they no longer own from their DEP. Be aware that any devices lost, stolen will need removing.
Is there a charge to participate in Apple device enrolment?
Apple does not charge customers to participate in DEP or the device enrolment service or Apple School Manager scheme. An MDM solution such as Airwatch would be at extra cost.
Can HardSoft help by enrolling devices into Device enrolment?
Unfortunately no. End users must enrol in DEP or the device enrolment service of Apple School Manager and accept the terms and conditions themselves. Customers who request HardSoft to perform additional integration or management services (such as an MDM) can latterly create an admin account within their DEP portal or Apple School Manager portal to add and manage these services on the customers behalf.
Could customers create their own API?
Organisations should be able to develop functional integration with Apple’s device enrolment APIs using two or three developers in about 10 weeks. Alternatively an off the shelf solution should be considered. HardSoft offer VMWare Airwatch.
