A major difference between MST and DisplayLink is that Apple does not support MST technology. Due to the new macOS operating system, if a docking station or a video adapter is plugged in, macOS displays the same content across all monitors.
M1/Silicon Mac’s allow you to connect a single external display to your Mac. Docks will not increase the number of displays you can connect, however you can still enjoy the benefits of the other ports. On a Mac mini with an Apple M1 chip, you can connect a second display to the HDMI port.

Mac computers with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports allow you to connect a single display to each port. Mac devices with Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or Thunderbolt 2 allow you to connect up to two displays.
