All rugged laptops are built to Military Specifications, which means that regardless of whether it’s semi-rugged or fully rugged you will have a laptop that meets some or all Military Specifications. But what is the difference?

Fully Rugged LaptopsRugged Range

Fully rugged laptops are designed to be able to function in even the harshest and most extreme environments. They can take a real beating and still perform, whether they’re in the desert dust, frozen arctic, or torrential monsoon rains. Each of their components is waterproofed and sealed, preventing moisture, sand, and any other hazardous environmental elements, harming or destroying the computer.
Fully rugged computers are also designed to considerably reduce glare from both artificial light and the sun, allowing you to see the screen easily and ensure you can use your laptop fully. Extreme variations of temperature can affect the functionality of some computers, making them work slowly or even stop them working at all. A fully rugged laptop is tough enough to withstand extreme heat and sub-freezing temperatures.
The fully rugged laptops may not be pretty to look at but they perform so well that they are considered military grad computers. They stay reliable whether they are dropped, or shocked – some are even able to resist a blast – and are almost indestructible.

Semi-Rugged Laptops

Semi-rugged laptops are standard laptops or notebooks which have had some adaptation to handle tough conditions. They often have a spill-proof keyboard, a strong magnesium case, and a shock or gel-mounted hard drive which cushions it from any impact. These laptops can survive in high and low extremes of temperature, however their performance will suffer e.g. extreme cold will result in a slowing down of performance, or screens freezing and becoming unreadable, however they will be operational once they are back in less severe temperatures.
These laptops are able to handle a certain degree of harsh conditions but nowhere near as intense as the fully rugged models. These laptops are generally best suited to outdoor work and are popular with those working in construction and utilities whose jobs involve some rough conditions but not to any extreme. In comparison to the fully rugged laptops, semi-rugged laptops tend to look more sleek and stylish, as well as being lighter and more portable.
