Finding the perfect coffee shop to work in can be tricky, so here are our top 6 to help you choose.

When it comes to getting work done away from the office, it’s not just about the coffee. Great WiFi that is strong enough and reliable too is a necessity, as well as seating that’s the right mix of comfortable but functional. You want somewhere that’s got a good buzz about it but isn’t going to be so busy, or loud, that you can’t think straight. And if they have power points that they’re happy for you to plug into, even better!

These are the kind of places where you can grab an hour out of the office or away from home, or settle in for the day. As long as you obey the rules and order frequently, be friendly to the staff, and tip well when you leave, you’ll be churning out the work in no time.

These are our tips for the top 6 coffee shops to work in in London 2019. In no particular order:

Mare Street Market

This warehouse space is on the edge of London Fields in Hackney. It’s fast become one of the best places to work from in this part of town. It may not be Shoreditch, but it’s got it’s fair share of MacBook users. There is plenty of space to grab a table at any time of day, and the Wifi is reliable. They serve Flying Horse coffee which is roasted on site and makes a good cup. You can grab a breakfast sandwich, or choose something from the all-day menu.

Towpath Café

If the weather is fine, then the Towpath Café on Regents Canal is the perfect place to work and watch the world go by. With a seemingly endless stream of people strolling, jogging, or cycling past, there is plenty of people watching to be done whilst you work. The coffee is good, and their cheese toastie is up there with the best we’ve tasted.

The British Library

You can choose from the cafe on the front or the takeaway kiosk in the foyer at the British Library in St Pancras. Permanently busy, but with usually no more that a couple of minutes wait for a table, you can work, read, or have a break and relax if the mood takes you. The coffee is Origin from Cornwall and is very good, plus they offer a great range of sandwiches too.

With it’s high ceilings and abundance of plants, the airy space at Lighthaus is a great place to work. It may be on an industrial estate in Walthamstow but it also feels like one of those local neighbourhood cafes we mentioned earlier, with it’s sofas and stools giving you options for the way you prefer to work. Coffee is from Cornish roasters, Yallah, and the food on offer is delicious.

Tucked away in a residential part of Stoke Newington, Esters feels like a proper neighbourhood café. It may be small but this means small tables, so you don’t have to feel guilty for taking up a table for four and they’re happy for you to work, as long as you order regularly. Speaking of ordering, the menu changes often and is delicious. When the weather is good, there is a small garden out the back so you can enjoy the sun while you work too.

Bulldog Edition at The Ace Hotel

A list of great coffee shops and cafes in London wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Shoreditch, and so The Ace Hotel gets a mention. A mixture of tables and sofas, the on-site cafe at the Ace Hotel is a freelancers dream and, more often than not, rammed to the max, and whilst the 24/7 availability of the lobby makes it understandably popular, the Bulldog Edition is a quieter space and more of a refuge, with Square Mile’s batch brew filter coffee and good baked offerings.

100 Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6JQ
