A common query with users is how to successfully install and use SOLIDWORKS
So we thought we’d write a blog answering this very question! In this blog, we will cover an individual installation, activation and uninstallation of SOLIDWORKS step by step.
Before you initiate this process, it is important to ensure that you have administrative rights on the computer that you are using.
- Log onto the Customer portal, from here select “Download and updates” from the “Download” tab.
This will take you to the SOLIDWORKS website and display the downloads that you are entitled to. From this page select the version of SOLIDWORKS that you are looking to install, in this example it will SOLIDWORKS 2020, service pack 0.1.
After this read the terms and conditions and accept when you are ready. After this run the “setup.exe” download, and unzip the folder when prompted to. When running the “setup.exe” download, it is recommended to do so by right clicking and running as administrator, to prevent errors with the download.
Now the installation manager will open. Select “the install on this computer option” to initiate an individual installation.
Now enter your serial number for the SOLIDWORKS products that you are entitled to (if you have previously downloaded SOLIDWORKS before, it will open with a serial number already typed in) after this the installation manager will perform a system check in order to ensure entitlement to the software.
After this the installation manager will give you the option to customize the installation. The products tab it will allow you to specify which Products you want to install. Note that by clicking the change link by the download options tab, users can now specify whether they would like to download and install of just download and then install later and to toggle the use of the background downloader. Users can then choose a specific directory for SOLIDWORKS files and toolbox (in the installation and toolbox/hole wizard options tabs respectively). It is recommended to give unique names to toolbox folders as if the installation is carried out again, and creates a toolbox folder with the same name, it will automatically create a new folder. While this does not hinder functionality it could get confusing keeping track of multiple folders.
After this the download will begin and the installation manager will notify you when the download is downloaded.
Should this be the first time that SOLIDWORKS is installed on this computer, upon starting the software SOLIDWORKS will require activation. Users can either activate the SOLIDWORKS immediately or will be given a 30 day grace period, however once that period is over, users will need to activate the SOLIDWORKS.
Should you wish to uninstall SOLIDWORKS, this can be done as easily as installation. First open the control panel (which can be done by searching the command bar/sear bar) after this select “program and features”. Select your SOLIDWORKS version, right click uninstall.
After this the SOLIDWORKS installation manager will open, with a summary page asking for what SOLIDWORKS products you would like to uninstall. While you be selective with what products you want uninstalled, in this example we will be doing a clean uninstall and selecting all products
After this, similar to the installation process, the SOLIDWORKS installation manager will carry out the installation, be sure no to close the uninstallation before it is completed as this can cause errors.
