There are lots of great graphics cards on the market, and some not so great, and sometimes it feel like the odds are stacked against you ever finding the right one but it doesn’t have to be that hard. Especially when you’ve spent thousands of pounds on software and then the software company denies any responsibility as to what spec of PC will work. Often they quote the lowest spec they can which means more people can afford the software.
If you’re a developer, a designer, or a 3D Artist, you will have specialist pieces of software you need for your niche, all of which will need a graphics card that supports your software to the peak of it’s capabilities. It’s all too easy to choose a GPU which you think is going to work, only to find out that it doesn’t and has been a costly mistake.
Specialist software need specific things from a graphics card and you can get it terribly wrong if you choose the wrong one. Graphics cards can also be extremely expensive, particularly when you’re also purchasing specialised software, so leasing them both from HardSoft, as well as the perfect computer to use them on, makes sense for your pocket and for your business.
A recent exciting development has been from Nvidia, who have created a graphics card selector which you can now use to select the right graphics card. You do this by searching various criteria, such as by feature, software, software vendor and industry and this checks which graphics card is the one you need for your particular requirements. The best thing to do then is get in touch with us and let us know which card the selector advised for you. We will then source the kit for you, we offer high end PCs from HP, as well as bespoke ones from Strongbox, so we can create the perfect package to fit your needs. We are IT hardware and software experts, so we can work with your software providers to ensure you have everything you need to prevent any incompatibility issues occurring later.
HardSoft offer Graphics Workstations to lease from HP and also offer bespoke PC’s from Strongbox Technology. If you’ve still decided that you’re going it alone, here are some other things to consider when choosing your graphics card.
Monitor Resolution –Put simply, the resolution of your monitor defines how much work your graphics card has to do, so it needs to be bigger and have more on-board RAM to handle bigger resolutions. If you plan on having a really high resolution monitor e.g. 4K 3840×2160 then you need to spend more on your graphics card.
Memory- The minimum memory would be around 2GB but more would be better, particularly if your resolution is higher. If you have 4K, or high resolution SuperWide monitors, then 4GB or more will be best.
Will it fit? –Modern graphics cards need a x16 PCIe slot which supports a speed of at least x8 and supports PCIe 2 as a minimum. Bear in mind that graphics cards come in all shapes and sizes, some are long some are short, some occupy one slot of your motherboard while others take up three slots, although this is rare. And will you have enough power from the Power Supply to power than new Graphics card ?
Model names and numbers –There are so many to choose from but a general rule is that the bigger the number the faster the card is – and the faster the card, the bigger the price tag will be. And you might just need to take out a mortgage to buy one with a name, rather than a number!
