The new Microsoft Surface Book has finally emerged. We have been waiting patiently, but there are now alternatives.

Surface base performance leasing

The Surface Book with Performance Base is their new I7 laptop, with detachable screen, nVidia graphics, and a PEN

The Surface Book Performance Base is a 13.5 inch laptop with a removable screen (for those of you with your head in a hole and missed the last Surface Book). The Surface Book Performance Base isn’t so much as a new product as it is three updated models of the late 2015 version. Each of the Surface Book models incorporates the same Intel “Skylake” Core i7-based Clipboard tablet module but with a new keyboard base which supports a speedier Nividia Geforce GPU. The new higher prices also reflect the update ! With prices at £23.40 per week on a 3 year business lease it’s not cheap though does have 16GB RAM ,512GB Flash.

The Surface Book features a stunning 13.5-inch PixelSense 3:2 ratio high-resolution 3K touch screen to compliment its new NVIDIA GeForce graphics. Boasting up to 16 hours battery life, 4 more than the previous model. The Surface pen comes as standard, this is an incredibly versatile machine. As an upgrade, the question is, do we need one? With the time taken to release this bad boy, others such as Lenovo, Dell and HP have also released similarly powerful notebooks at lower prices.

x360

EliteBook X360 very thin,secure, convertible

The HP Elitebook x360 has a screen which flips back 360º although this may not be as versatile as the Surface, it is still a very impressive piece of kit. Containing Core i7-7600U vPro this laptop also has sixteen hours battery life. Like the Surface Book it also light weight, fast and a 13″ touch screen. Has the advantage of a tough carbon case and its very big USP is security. Features like Privacy screen, walk up security under HP Workwise, self-healing BIOS make it the most secure laptop available. The EliteBook x360 is available to lease at  £18.55 plus VAT per week on an i7 CPU. With HardSoft this expensive laptop becomes affordable.

xps13

Dell XPS 13 with Edge to Edge display

The Dell XPS 13-9360 is also a brilliantly powerful laptop, with a classy, slim and super light design. This beautiful machine has excellent battery life and although does not have a detachable screen, the 2-in-1 version has a screen that can be flipped all of the way around. The Dell XPS 13 features a 13″ Full HD, borderless display giving you as much viewing space as possible! Featuring the new 7th Generation processors, experience powerful and smooth performance. You can lease a Dell XPS-13  with i7 CPU from HardSoft from just £15.25 plus VAT per week. Its USP is its style.

x1

Carbon X1- 14″ in a 13″ chassis,choice of colours

Weighing less than 1.2kgs, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is the lightest 14″ business Ultrabook in the market. Slightly bigger screen but lighter than the others. Its a 14″ Quad HD screen in a 13″ chassis. Featuring i7 CPU’s a choice of Flash Storage up to 1TB for quick, silent performance. Built to military spec this Lenovo X1 Carbon can charge to 80% in one hour. Available in two chassis colours. With three years warranty the Carbon X1 is on a business lease at £14.85 per week.

Depending on what you are using it for it is worth keeping in mind that Surface Book is unique in the world of 2-in-1 PCs, it is a real laptop, not a super tablet hybrid or a laptop with a rotating screen. The Surface Book is all the laptop you need with the super handy design to let you use it as a tablet when needed. It all boils down to what you need and of course what you want. I have to say, even though I think that the hinge looks a bit rubbish, leaving a gap when closed, I really want one. Like really want one. I don’t know why I need a laptop that can be used as a tablet yet but I think I am going to find a reason…… soon!

My Summary…… in ascending price order- though they are all very similarly priced.

Surface Book with Performance Base-  Detachable screen, only unit with dedicated graphics, most expensive,NO USB-C…

HP EliteBook X360- Touchscreen, very very secure, USB-C, no graphics options….

Lenovo Carbon X1  -Lightest and 14″ Quad HD screen in a 13″ chassis that’s lighter than any other 13″ or 14″. No Touchscreen

Dell XPS-13- smartest looking and best compromise. Touchscreen at extra cost.
