Apple announcement September 2015: No 4K iMac yet, but plenty of exciting stuff on the way

At 7pm last night (10am PT), Apple CEO Tim Cook made the company’s annual September announcement regarding a new and exciting range of technology products. We recently discussed all the potential rumours surrounding what would be unveiled, so how right were we? Let’s take a look.

No 4K iMac, but two new iPhones

The 4K iMac is still expected to be announced in October, as several sites had predicted, and its absence from mention at this event only makes those suspicions stronger. But while we’re left to wait another month for news on whether the 21.5 inch iMac will be upgraded, iPhone enthusiasts will be most pleased.
“While they may look familiar, we have changed everything about these new iPhones,” said Tim Cook, unveiling two brand new smartphones: the new iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S. They’ll be available in four colours – silver, gold, space grey and rose gold – and the material they’re made from has changed to 7000 series aluminium. It makes this new device more robust and unlikely to bend.

So what else is new? There’s the new 3D touch screen previously known as Force Touch, which was first introduced in Apple trackpads and the Apple Watch (more updates on that later). Pressing and holding the screen is recognised more sensitively, and it even vibrates to let you know certain things have been pressed.
The camera has been improved too – by 50 per cent. The 12 megapixel iSight rear camera has 50 per cent more pixels than the iPhone 6. Other additions include Live Photos, which records a second-and-a-half video either side of your photo being taken, and faster fingerprint sensors. read more

The future of Mac

The future of Mac

PC sales may be in decline, but even at over thirty years old, the Apple Mac continues to buck the trend. During the third quarter of 2015, Apple sold 4.8 million Macs and in the second quarter, sales rose by ten per cent year on year. These are impressive figures, but in a world increasingly dominated by mobile devices, are Macs going to continue to be successful?

We look into what the future holds for Macs.

Increased portability

You only need to look at the new MacBook to see the direction in which Macs are quickly moving. It’s the device that’s being dubbed by everyone everywhere as ‘the future of laptops’, and perhaps they’re right. Apple’s new MacBook is much lighter than the MacBook Air, and not much thicker than a full-size iPad. On the surface, it may seem like a gimmick to produce the slimmest and lightest MacBook ever, but Apple made this decision for a good reason – MacBook needs to keep up with mobile devices. read more

Creative designers –why should you use a Wacom tablet?

Wacom tablet for leasingWhen it comes to the relatively modern profession of digital graphic design, some creative types are surprisingly purist. Of course, in that game, being old-fashioned just means you still do all of your work on a Mac computer with a mouse, rather than on a tablet. It’s hardly as dated as a journalist writing by hand or on a typewriter.

While you should always work on what you find most comfortable, many creative designers have indeed introduced tablet devices to their work. There are a number of interesting benefits that the Wacom tablet in particular offers, so if you’re considering adding a graphics tablet into your design arsenal, let’s break them down. read more
