Last week we ran an iMac Test Zone where we invited our customer and network to road test or play with, the new 2019 iMac i9 and the iMac Pro in our Shoreditch Office.
We had the iMac i9 8-core and iMac Pro: Xeon 8-core set up with the Adobe Suite for our community to Road Test their own files, along with high-end screens from Samsung and ASUS, as well as Chromebooks from ASUS and Google.
Case Study : Post Production Editor & Motion Graphics Designer @ Global Media Network
We had a Post Production Editor visit to road test both iMacs and run some day-to-day tests which he could easily compare against his 7-year-old MacPro. Using some pre-recorded video we tested rendering speeds in standard definition and high definition using Adobe Premiere Pro. From our initial testing is became apparent that the iMac Pro is slightly faster – but only by a second!
We then tested some post-production video editing (broadcast) and from this testing it seemed the iMac i9 was working in equivalence to the iMac Pro. But, because the i9 27” iMac is at its ceiling in terms of specification, after a longer duration of time it ran hotter than the iMac Pro.
For still image editors the iMac i9 does the job, particularly for lower quality shorter solutions rendering, and it’s cheaper than its counterpart the iMac Pro, however, the iMac Pro is a great option because of the upgradability.
We didn’t know what the outcome would be, both machines had 32GB RAM, flash storage and 2GB Pro Vega graphics cards, plus the brand new i9 iMac has only just become available and this is our first world test.
Running some other benchmarks the disk writing speed is a third faster on the iMac Pro than iMac i9, but the disk reading speed is equivalent. They are both 8 Core CPU’s and after running some Geek Bench test the results are:
iMac i9 = multi core CPU score 33653 / single core 6378
iMac Pro = multi core score = 33552 / single core 5256
So, to sum up, the new i9 is held its own against the iMac Pro but it’s important to bear in mind that the iMac i9 is pretty much at its top spec and there isn’t much room to upgrade, the iMac Pro was only the base model so there is so much more scope to increase its power capabilities.
Displays were also Available to Try
We also had 2 ultra-wide screens and an Asus Portable display available to try.
The Asus 34” PA Screen is a stretched version of standard widescreen but more useable and with a curve, it gives you more emersion. It has great colour accuracy and colour calibration. It is an IPS display these are renowned when it comes to colour performance and super-wide viewing angles. Perfect for creative users and publishers, post-production, graphic designers etc.
It also works as a hub/dock it offers laptops users a one cable/connection facility with HDMI, Display Port, Headphone jack, additional thunderbolt connection (for daisy chain other thunder devices), 3x USB 3 connectivity + doubles as a charger (60W) for the device it plugs into.
Samsung’s 49” Ultra Wide Display is perfect if you prefer to have a single screen rather than two, offering a massive single workspace. However, because it is so wide the screen ratio this may not work for designers as images can be displayed out of proportion. That said, it does look great on your desk and has brilliant picture quality.
This display also works as a hub/dock for laptop users and offers HDMI, Display Port, Headphone jack, additional thunderbolt connection (for daisy chain other thunder devices), 1x USB 3 connectivity + doubles as a charger (15W) for the device it plugs into.
The Asus portable screen is perfect for mobile users but it’s worth noting that it will quickly drain your battery life because it draws power via the USB-C port on your laptop. It’s very portable and great screen to give you a bigger workspace when you’re on the move.
There were two Chromebooks Available to Test
The Google PixelBook is extremely thin and looks great, it also feels more robust. The Asus Chromebook Flip can be used as a 2-in-1 as it can be used as a laptop and a tablet with its foldable screen. Both Chromebooks are perfect for portable users with everything on Google, although you can install Microsoft Office.
