The cheap and easy way to get a dual monitor set up.
Duet Display is an App for PC and Mac, which allows you to utilise your iPhone or iPad as a display for your Mac or PC. The App was developed by ex-Apple engineers who have made it possible to use an iPad or iPhone as a second stream seamlessly. Although it had been done before, it hadn’t been done this well!
The beauty of Duet Display is that it looks and feels like an Apple product and is just as easy to use. This App is so much better than I had expected and has given my old iPad a new lease of life as a portable secondary screen with the use of an App and the charging cable!
For a one-time cost of just £19.99, you can use your iPad as a secondary display. Many of us like to ultilise a secondary display to increase productivity and this is ideal when we are on the move. For those using their laptops on the move, and especially for those displaying information for customers or colleagues, the iPad can be used to exhibit information.
How it works
To use Duet Display, you’ll need to download a free app for your PC or Mac, as well as the iPad app. Once you’ve installed the relevant app on both devices, there isn’t too much more to do in terms of set up, and there is plenty of help available on the app’s website.
Once you’ve installed the app on your computer, you’ll need to grant permission for the app to add a graphics driver onto your system. This will not affect the current existing system drivers. Once the driver and the app have been installed, you will need to restart your system.
Next, you’ll need to connect Duet. Simply start Duet on your iPad or iPhone, as well as on you Mac or PC. Then connect your iPad or iPhone to your computer using the USB to 30 pin or the lightning cable. Once Duet detects the iPad or iPhone, it will then launch.
Now you’re all set up and ready to enjoy your additional screen space. You simply need to click and drag the title bar of your apps and move them across the edge of the computer’s screen, onto your new secondary screen.
Remember, you’ll need to keep the iPad connected with the cable at all times.
Duet Display is compatible with all desktops, iPads, and iPhones, providing they meet the minimum system requirements. Currently, the app requires iOS 8.0 or later, although previous app versions are compatible with iOS 7.
Duet Display offers a whole host of benefits. Firstly, it is fast – allowing you to enjoy a retina display at 60 frames per second without any lag. It is also productive and has been shown to increase productivity by up to 48%.
What’s more, with OS X, you can now interact using the most advanced display for your Mac. Because Duet is more powerful than a regular external monitor, it comes with touch support, so you can interact with your OS X directly with your fingers.
