Catalina OS – What’s New and how can Parallels Help?

4th November 2019

Catalina (macOS 10.15) is here and available to install – as long as your Mac device is new enough!

Apple announced Catalina at the WWDC 2019 earlier in the year, showcasing new features, like the capability to use an iPad as a secondary screen, and now finally it’s here. It’s a big one too, with a new feature called ‘Project Catalyst’ allowing iOS 13 and iPadOS developers to port their data to the macOS environment, meaning you’ll have access to more Mac apps when you update – but you may want to wait a while! There are, almost inevitably, bugs associated with all new updates, and Catalina is no exception. So holding off for a few days whilst those bug fixes are put in place is often a wise move.

Which Mac Devices have Catalina Capability?

If you’re ready to update to Catalina, you first need to make sure your Mac device supports it. If you already have macOS Mojave installed on your device you’re probably fine, just to be sure these are the Macs which have macOS 10.15 Catalina capability:

  • Mac mini (2012 on)
  • iMac (2012 on)
  • iMac Pro (2017)
  • Mac Pro (2013 on)
  • MacBook 12″ (2015 on)
  • MacBook Air (2012 on)
  • MacBook Pro (2012 on)

What’s New and What’s Gone?

With Catalina we lose iTunes after almost 20 years, but in its place is a range of new apps; Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books. Don’t worry, all of your music and playlists will be transferred over to Apple Music in Catalina – and your unspent iTunes credits and iTunes gift cards will be valid to use in the new apps.

Probably the most exciting update from macOS 10.15 Catalina is Sidecar – the ability to use an iPad to extend the display of your Mac device’s display, with or without wires! If you own a MacBook, the chances are that you also own an iPad, so you just acquired an additional display. Perfect for the hordes of mobile and freelance workers out there. And if you’re a designer, you can use supported apps, such as Adobe Illustrator, iWork, and Final Cut Pro X, to use your iPad as a drawing tablet.
