Apple introduced the MacBook Pro (portable computers) in 2006, and it is now in its third generation. The MacBook Pro (replaced the PowerBook G4) was the second model, after the iMac, in the Apple–Intel transition. The MacBook Pro (the high-end model of the MacBook family) is currently delivered with 13-inch and 15-inch screens (previously there was also a 17-inch version).

Second generation MacBook Pros emerged in October 2008 as a 15-inch and 13-inch aluminium unibody (a casing made from a single block of aluminum) MacBook. Shortly after, this design was introduced to the 17-inch model, as well as a built-in battery. Subsequent updates brought upgraded Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduced Intel's Thunderbolt technology.

Third generation MacBook Pros were introduced during June 2012 with a 15-inch screen size only (slightly updated versions of the 13-inch and 15-inch unibody models were announced and the 17-inch variant was discontinued). The most significant differences in this generation of MacBook Pro are the fitting of a considerably higher resolution Retina display, the elimination of the optical drive, and replacement of hard disk drives with solid-state drives.

On 23rd October 2012 a third generation 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display was released.
